Chants to San Fermin

The closure has a particularly emotional preamble. This is the time when the runners gathered a few meters from the Corrals where the bulls are locked, raise their rolled newspapers and chant before the image of the saint, placed in a niche in Santo Domingo´s Hill. In the deepest silence you can only hear the following song: "A San Fermín pedimos, por ser nuestro patrón, nos guíe en el encierro dándonos su bendición. Entzun arren San Fermin zu zaitugu patroi zuzendu gure oinak entzierro hontan otoi" This is the Spanish version and in a nutshell, they are asking to San Fermin to guide & help them while running in front of the bulls.

The basque version would be: “Entzun leased San Fermin zu zaitugu patroi zuzendu gure oinak entzierro Hontan Otoi.". The song is done in Castilian and Basque. At the end cries Live San Fermin! The soon is finished by: Viva San Fermin! Gora San Fermin! This strophe is sung as follows in three consecutive occasions: first time, 5´, 3´ & 1´ before 8 am (running of the bulls start at 8:00),

The Shepherds

The shepherd’s team is formed with ten men that cover the entire running of the bulls. These brave men run behind the bulls with a unique protection a long wooden cane. Their main functions are to prevent irresponsible runners teasing the bulls behind risking other runners safety as the bull can turn their back and run in the opposite direction. The shepherd ensure the guidance of those bulls left behind in any part of the running of the bulls itinerary up to the entrance of all the beasts into the Bullfight Ring.

The Dobladores

Another essential factor to ensure a smooth running of the bulls is the Dobladores (benders) team. This team has a good knowledge of the bullfighting world and bulls behaviour so they are placed inside the Bullfight Ring Arena to do 2 very important safety measures: first one, help the runners and make the “abanico” (the fan as it means help the runners to go towards the sides of the arena and not pile up in front of the bulls at their entrance of the Bullfight Ring. Very dangerous when this happens!). and second one, attract the bulls to enter the Bullfight Corral as soon as possible so any one gets injured.

The Running of the Bulls: “What´s important to know”

The Running of the Bulls is a unique experience for the viewer and for those that decide to participate in theBull Run. It´s a show defined by the risk and physical ability of the runners. 

The inexperienced runner has to learn the features of this dangerous running and integrate all the safety measures established to ensure not only his safety but of those running close to him. The running of the bulls is not for anyone to run. Requires serenity, excellent reflexes and extreme physical preparation. Those who do not meet these requirements should not participate. The risk is serious.

The runners must be at the section between the City Hall Square and the Education Building on Santo Domingo´s Hill, and must be done before 7:30 am, because after this time the access doors will be shut down. The rest of the running of the bulls itinerary will remain completely free of runners until a few minutes before 8 am where the police barrier will open and the runners will start choosing the spot they have decided to run with the bulls.

Bull Running Pamplona, July 14, 2014

Is unbelievable to think after seeing this picture that few months later, this young lawyer of Pamplona, was in perfect conditions. 

Originally, Juan Miura´s Livestock was founded in 1842. The legend of this fighting bull, the most indomitable in the arena, has been forged through a differentiated and unique type of bull with clear ancient echoes. The original crossbreed have resulted in a unique bull: high horns, tall and wide breast, bony and high paws, thin skin and a fresh face.

Miura is a name attached to the Bullfighting Fiesta since immemorial times. A legend filled with tragic events such as the dramas unfolded with these matadors: Pepete, Llusío, el Espartero, Domingo Dominguín, Faustino Posadas, Pedro Cañete & Manolete, in Linares (Jaén) in 1947.

Bull Running Pamplona, July 13, 2014

Their ownership indicative (divisa) fixed in the bull´s ears is a sign in green and red. Their ranch is in Escurial, Cáceres (South of Spain). 

Adolfo Martin Livestock first joined the Fighting Bulls Livestock Association in 1952. In 1965 he bought Calvo Escudero´s livestock previously known as Albarresada Marquis. Therefore, the origin of Adolfo Martin Livestock is Santa Coloma and Saltillo.

Adolfo Martin began to enjoy the prestige it deserved mainly from the season they had in 1999. Lagartijo a bull that fought on June 7th at the prestigious bullfight festival, Feria de San Isidro (Madrid) won the trophy as best bull in Las Ventas. That year he also achieved great success with their calves in the town of Arnedo in La Rioja. In 2000 Adolfo Martin returned to Las Ventas under the category of one of the most admired by those bullfight enthusiasts. At that time, the bull named Malagueño II, who was fought on June 4 won the jury award. Although he has tried hard, Adolfo hasn´t managed to remove the label of 'hard Victorinos' on his bulls (his brother is Victorino Martín Andrés).

Bull Running Pamplona, July 12, 2014

In the province of Cádiz at the foot of the Sierra de Grazalema, between the towns of San José del Valle y Algar, near the natural park "Los Alcornocales" is the reservoir, of "Guadalcacín". In its waters you can see cohabiting numerous birds: ducks, herons, egrets and other birds, but there is also something else. In one of its shore lies the meadow "Lo Romeral" where brave bulls are bred.

These bulls are born and raised among all these birds playing and laying in the reservoir shore with them. They have a beautiful gift from Mother Nature. These privileged beasts are marked with the ownership indicative iron of Fuente Ymbro and are property of Mr. Ricardo Gallardo, a gentleman which is proud to say that he is a hobby breeder and not by tradition.

Bull Running Pamplona, July 11, 2014

Jandilla is a Spanish Livestock based in a ranch named the same, Jandilla situated in Vejer de la Frontera, Cadiz (South of Spain). It was founded in 1954 by the Domeq brothers.

Since 2007 they extended their bulls population to two other ranches in Extremadura. Their ownership indicative on the bulls (divisa) is blue.

One of this Livestock bull fatally gored a 27 years old runner, in 2009, in the fourth day of the running of bulls the San Fermin festival.

Garcigrande Livestock is located in Salamanca (Mid Spain). Established in 1986, the owner is Mrs. Concha Gil Escobar. Their ownership indicative on the bulls (divisa) is red & white, exactly the same colours used during all those enjoying the San Fermin Festival.

This is their first year participating in the running of the bulls of San Fermin and we are all looking forward to see how these bulls behave.

Victoriano del Rio bulls livestock is located in Gauadalix de la Sierra (Madrid). Their ownership indicative on the bulls (divisa) is black and yellow and it was established back in 1942. Their current owner is Juan Pedro Domecq.

These bulls are known to be very fast in the Running of the bulls during San Fermin festival. They are so fast that even some runners call them "bullet bulls." The picture below features the view from our rent balconies.

Torrestrella is a Spanish Livestock of fighting bulls founded by the rejoneador (matador in a horse) Álvaro Domecq Díez (1917-2005), after his death in October 2005, the property was inherited by his son Alvaro Domecq Romero. It is located in the family ranch Los Albujeros in Medina Sidonia as well as in the Family Estate named Camila in Chiclana de la Frontera, both of them are in Cadiz (South of Spain). Their indicative of ownership of bulls (Divisa) is blue and gold and the official antiquity as a breeder is since September 1954.

Matew Dowsset

"In which direction run the bulls? “ A foreigner was asking him on his running of the bulls premier, Matthew Dowsset (Leeds, England, 1971). This was on July the 7^th, 2001. At that moment, he knew he was more prepared than the average. As a child, before becoming agent banking, he had seen on the news some pictures of the bull running during the San Fermin Festival in Pamplona and he said to himself: “One day I would do it”. That day, before entering tight mass gathered on the Town Hall at half past seven in the morning, he had done his homework’s and knew every theoretical bit about this famous race.

Back in England he admitted to a friend "I had read a lot, but when only in the moment I heard the rocket I understood everything ... There is no way to get ready for that." He had studied all about San Fermin Festival but there were no books or videos that explain the violence you are faced against in the last meters of the Santo Domingo´s Hill, just at the entrance of City Hall. "A bull slipped and stood for a moment looking at my friend. It was incredible…" The bull run was over, the bulls where already in the Bullfight Ring Corrals and all the runners where sharing their experience, the rush, the amazing feeling they felt but Dowsett didn’t share their feelings at all! He didn’t feel like them.

Once the Running of the Bulls is over, the runners face two possibilities: either you love it or you hate it. Matt, hate it but he was true to his promise: "I swore I'd bring  my mother, my girlfriend and a friend a San Fermin scarf I wore while running with the Bulls. He still had to run 3 times to make his promise. He managed to face the nightmares where the bulls lurked him all night long. The very last day he participated on the running of the bulls he decided to run the last bit and enter the Bullfight ring. This is how he described the experience: "From darkness and total lack of space we arrived into the plaza, and a total new scenario was in front of us. A mass of people under a huge blue sky where sitting on the Bullfight Arena cheering, all that open air, the smell of the beasts and the runners on the arena… This was a metaphor for what the running of the bulls means to me. At that moment I felt that would want to do it for ever”. Since then he has not stopped. He knows very welll Navarra´s festivals and has learned a lot down the path:  "I have been taught to know and control my stress and my fear in the most stressful situations. There is a balance between run and get closer to danger. You learn about your limits and self worthiness"

Noel Chandler

He had rented a room in a house that was three to four kilometers from Pamplona. He barely used the bed. It was more a place where to go every other day to change clothes and take a shower. "The most important thing was partying”. Noel Chandler a welsh from Newport (12 miles from Cardiff) aged 76 was an enthusiast about bullfighting.  

He discovered San Fermin recommended by the famous matador Antonio Ordóñez (now deceased). One morning stood in a doorway on Estafeta St to watch the Running of the Bulls and admitted he was frozen by fear when he saw the human landslide mixed with bulls hooves sounding like howls coming to him. "I remember so clearly the runner’s faces and the rush in my heart”. After this, he decided to learn how to run in the Dead Man Corner as it most the most coveted part and he wanted to become a true runner among all the foreigners participating in the Bull Run.

He was an amateur glimpsing the abyss, but was hooked by his promise to Mat Carny, from Chicago. This gentleman was a wounded soldier who had escaped the carnage of the Battle of Iwo Jima. Their history was really unique. During 20 years they participate and care for each other while running with the bulls. Always "next to each other”. They became such a good friends that when he Carny died he decided to take care of his daughter, Deirdre, who was six years old at the time.

In 2001, Noel had a history on his back of running with the bulls for 40 years on a raw as well as being Fujitsu Vice president and he decided to give up running as he could tell he was more a “bump in the road”. As bullfighting enthusiast he would use the term: “Cut his ponny tail” But in 2003, he decided to run one more time when he found out that the Conde de la Corte Livestock where participating in the San Fermin Festival again. This was a unique run, his last run.

Nowadays with half a century attending San Fermin Bull Runs, he has become one of the most respected runners. He watches the Running of the Bulls from his apartment facing Estafeta St. He used to rent a balcony but finally decided to buy an apartment that was the closest he could find to his adored “Dead Man Corner” intersection. He still describes the feeling as if it was the first time: "Every morning, when I see the herd turning the Dead Man Curve, that “smething” gets in my lungs and I cannot breathe properly!

Tom Turley. New York

That morning of 1987, Tom Turley (New York, 46 years) was one of dozens of foreign graduatesvip in search of adventure that roamed the Plaza del Castillo in Pamplona. By chance he started talking to Todd, a young man that was having a drink with his family on a terrace. Tom was in Pamplona invited by a friend to experience the San Fermin Festival with no other plan than spending 24 hours partying, no sleep at all and not having a clue about Hemingway and his San Fermin Festival insights.

Todd's father, Ray, asked him if they had a place to stay and invited him to spent five days in the luxurious La Perla Hotel (5*), a paradise reserved for very few such as Hemingway. Tom couldn´t believe his luck, and this is when he understood one of the most important lessons of San Fermin, true and genuine friendship.  

He promised Ray, he would always come back to this festivity. And up to today he has kept his word. The first time he got into the Running of the Bulls (encierro) the legendary Miura Livestock where the protagonist of the day. ."I must admit the seeds of fear where inside me”, he admitted. He jumped and rolled under the fence down the alley. In the distance he saw the paws scraping the floor. "What a feeling ..." He definitely caught the San Fermin rush virus and started learning the proper techniques and courage need it until he became a magician of running de bulls on the most dangerous & famous place: “ Dead Man Corner”, the intersection of Estafeta and Mercaderes Street. You could see him always wearing a red pullover (another San Fermin gift that was given to him by a friend in a cold morning while going to the daily Bull Run).

And he thought for himself: “Perhaps the best thing is not to touch what is right: the pullover, the promise to Ray about participating yearly in the Running of the Bulls and don’t miss a day thinking on the Bull Run". When faced with the question: Why run? He would always answer "It’s as difficult as answering why you love a woman: Because of her beauty, her intelligence? There are no words or way to explain it " But one thing is for sure: "I know you have to get close to death to savour what life is about."

"Only Missing you nou!

The creators of 'Happy' San Fermin returned to the attack with a new audiovisual, 'Only missing you now!'. The premiere is this Friday as is the day where Pamplona climbs the last step of San Fermin ladder. .

Their proposal is: the "birth" of a rocket, the rocket that is launch on the 6th July at the Opening Ceremony of one "the biggest parties in the world." "We want to show how something so simple can create something huge, the excitement exploding in Pamplona with Chupinazo (Opening Ceremony)" explains one of the creators, who prefers to remain anonymous.

The video 'Happy' San Fermin, which has been viewed on YouTube by 321,095 people and it became the most watched of all recorded in Spain in the project of 'We Are Happy From', and that is shaking Internet since  20^th January 2014.

Pamplona, Quality of live

According to a recent Study done by the Spanish Consumers and Users Organization (OCU), Pamplona is the city with the best quality of life in Spain. Pamplona reaches a amazing score of 6.2 out of 10, in a study that includes aspects such as employment, health, education, cleanliness and safety.

The study was conducted on a sample of 19,241 people from different countries (Italy, Belgium, Portugaland Brazil), of whom 5,416 were Spanish. The survey assessed 126 cities, 30 of them Spanish, all chosen for their autonomy and number of inhabitants.

So we are proud to say that Pamplona is the Spanish city with the best quality of life followed by Vitoria, Gijón, (5.7), Bilbao, Logroño, Albacete and Oviedo. Funny enough, half of the towns evaluated didn´t pass the approval and were suspended. Among pamploneses (name for the local people of Pamplona), what they stands in their city is healthcare.

Pamplona appears also as the safest city in Spain. In San Fermin must be especially careful with purses and wallets particularly in agglomerations. If unfortunately someone stole your wallet you should call the 092 number, there will tell you the steps you must follow.

Chupinazo 2014

This year the security measures will be strengthen regarding the “Chupinazo” Opening Ceremony. Last year the rocket launch that heralds the festival of San Fermin (12h) was delayed 20 minutes, until a "giant" flag ((Ikurriña) placed by a group of people moments before 12 was withdrawn.

The mayor of Pamplona waited until the police removed the flag. A few months later the youngsters -who had with their faces covered at the time, were identified thanks to footprint found on the giant flag (5.50 x 6 meters. In March, the judge found that there was evidence of a crime for independence political reasons.

The Ikurriña is the Basque County´s flag and Pamplona is the capital of Navarra´s County.

San Fermín and Waste containers

Before San Fermín will start, the city council´s workers will remove the "mailboxes" for waste collection that are among the Running of the Bulls itinerary and they will reinstalled the pavers in the hollows occupied by these mailboxes. The old mobile containers will re-occupy their old location but only during San Fermin.
The vacuum waste collection on Pamplona´s Old Town  Pamplona has been functioning over a year now. This system allows the collection and transfer of househ old waste from the boxes installed in the street directly toa treatment plant through underground tunnels. Below each mailbox there arevertical some pipes which are provided with a system of valves used for emptying the container, so that the bags with all the residues are conducted by propelling air currents of up to 90 kilometres per hour through underground canal sup to the main head quarter plant which is 1.5 kms away from Pamplona. 

Currently there are 110 boxes scattered around the OldTown, 10 of them are situated in Estafeta St. With the retirement of old containers they have managed to create more space fo rpedestrian traffic, it has minimized the odour problems and removed the noise and pollution from the collection trucks as they no longer circulate in the area.

The Running of The Bulls

The Running of the Bullsis a unique experience for all the people gathered on the itinerary and specially for those who are going to run in front of the Bulls. It's a show that is defined by the willing risk and the physical abilities.
 The inexperienced runner must be informed of the dangerous characteristics of this race and the necessary protective measures to be taken for their safety and those who are at their side. Most of the times, from the balcony, we could see that recklessness havecaused serious injuries.

The Running of the Bulls isnot for everyone. Requires serenity, excellent awareness and strong physical preparation. Those not meeting these requirements should not participate in the race. The risk is serious.
Runners must be at the section between the Town Hall  Square (were the Chupinazo takes place) and the Education Building on the Cuesta de Santo Domingo.They must do so before 7.30 am, because after that time the doors will be closed. The rest of the itinerary will remain completely free of runners so anyone is allowed to be there and if the police see anyone they will ask them to leave the street. Few minutes before 8 am all the runners will decide where they want to run and how would they like to experience this risky but unique experience.

San Fermín and Pamplona

If today we took a walk in Pamplona you could tell that we have few days left for San Fermin! In most of the city shops, the windows are decorated with the San Fermin Festival theme and obviously the predominant colours are white and red. Another sign that the San Fermin Festival is approaching is that the Caritas Gair (Navarra´s main charity organization to help people in need), was installed in June at the Paseo de Sarasate and it will be removed for late July as this main street has to be free during San Fermin Festival. It's a tradition to buy tickets in this tombola. There are direct prizes and several cars will be given away as some holiday packages. Few days ago I bought 5 tickets (each one at 0.70 €), 4 of them was for the cars and one ticket for a prize of viewing a picture in the cinema for 2 people. I think it´s important to know that all the staff working in the raffle does it voluntarily.
In the streets among the San Fermin Running of the Bulls itinerary it´s all very lively right now as all those that we live among these streets we have start to thoroughly wash up our balconies and windows so everything is ready for our visitors. I must say it´sa bit tiring as we are located in the Dead Man Corner and have 8 spots in total, 6 overlooking Estafeta and 2  Mercederes St.! But I know is worth while as I love to have everyone experiencing the best San Fermin Festival!  ;-) I can also see how all the bars and restaurants are being provided with all the food and drinks, well mainly drinks as this is the main area for drinking rather than eating.

"The ladder"

In Pamplona is a custom among many groups of friends, to organise a dinner on the following dates January 1st, February 2nd, March 3rd, April 4th, May 5th, June 6th and finally, the very last one on July7th.
These dinners are called "The Ladder", as the first step begins the first day of the year and the 7th and last step is in the 7th July when San Fermin Festival will start with the Running of the Bulls as the 6th of July is the Chupinazo or Opening Ceremony.

At this moment we are counting down as in less than 20 days we will reach the last step, which is the last and more important one.  Some of these groups of friends, only the most devoted, they organize a mass each day of “The Ladder”. This mass will beheld in San Lorenzo´s Church as there is where the image of San Fermin is locateted.

Pamplona"s climate reflects a transition from a Mediterranean to an Atlantic climate. It is temperate-cold, full of contrast and varies from year to year. In general, it is pleasant, although the thermometer can rise above 35 degrees centigrade in July and August, and fall ben eath 0 in January.
Temperature.
The average temperature in the city over the whole year is 12.4 degrees centigrade. The change from winter to spring and from summer to autumn is sudden rather than gradual.

The average maximum temperature in August, the hottest month, is 27.1 degrees centigrade, while the average low in January, the coldest month, is 1.1.

Precipitacion.
Total precipitation in the year is 772.5 litres per square metre. It rains for a total of 132 days in the year, mainly in the winter. December is the wettest month and July and August are the driest.
Between March and November, there is an average of 39 days of frost, concentrated in December, January and February.

The “cierzo” (north wind) and the “bochorno” (south wind) are the winds typical to the area. Although just breezy and still days predominate, the wind can on occasions be quite gusty.

Pamplona, Population

The number of in habitants has risen from 307,669 in 1900 to 605.876 in 2007 and the density has grown from 29 inhabitants per square kilometre to 55. The population growth in Navarre has been below the Spanish average and density continues to be low.
The growth of district administrative centres, and especially of Pamplona and its metropolitan areas, has evolved at the expense of draining population from areas in which small rural hamlets prevail.
The Valles Pirenaicos, Tierra Estella and Navarre Media Oriental have been losing inhabitants since the beginning of the 20th century; this also applies, albeit to a more moderate extent, to the Navarre Húmeda, and growth has only been recorded in both Riberas and in the Pamplona basin, which concentrates the majority of the population of Navarre.
In terms of municipalities, 42.3% of the population of Navarre live in cities of more than 20,000 inhabitants, namely Pamplona, Tudela and Barañain, 39.2% in towns of between 2,000 and 20,000 inhabitants and 18.5% live in villages of fewer than 2,000 people.

In recent years, as has occurred in Spain as a whole, Navarre has become a receiving region for a migrant population. In total, it is estimated that nearly 20,000 people have arrived from developing countries. The greater part of this migrant influx has settled in the district of Pamplona and the remainder is distributed throughout Navarre, although to a greater extent in the southern third of the community.

Hemingway and Sanfermines

Once the San Fermin Festival was over, Hemingway used to travel though out Navarre. He would visit the same locations year after year, Yesa Swamp, Irati´s River as well as Lekunberri and Auritz/ Burguete, near Roncesvalles but his favourite place for practicing one of hismain passions which was fishing was Irati´s river. This year is the 100th Anniversary of Ayestarán Hotel in Lekunberri and it still remains in perfect condition maintained by the same family as this hotel is run by them since it was founded in 1912. Among its guests we can find several famous people such as Orson Wells and the King Balduin of Belgium. Lekumberri is located only 34 kms from Pamplona.

Inge Morath and San Fermin

"Inge Morath: San Fermin. 50s" is the title of the exhibition Constable's Palace hosts until August 24. It shows a selection of 54 photographs of the San Fermin festival of the 50´s captured by the Austrian lady, Ms. Inge Morath, the images are in black and while and collect moments during San Fermin Festival and the city´s life in the post-war period.

The material presented has sentimental value, as well as historical andeven sociological, where they intermingle scenes from the Running of the Bulls,the Giants and Big Heads Parade, Bullfighting Rituals as seeing getting dressed ready to go the Bullfight Arena to the famous torero Mr. Ordoñez as well as other kind of daily life in the city, its markets and streets.
The exhibition can be seen until August 24, from 9-14 hours and 17-21hours. During the festival of San Fermin will be open from 8, 10, 11, 12 and 13 July, and their schedule will be from 11 to 14 hours. Note that the Constable'sPalace is closed on days 6, 7, 9 and 14 July.

The first visit to Spain of  Ms. Inge Morath was in the 50's, accompanied by the publisher Mr. Robert Delpire and French writer Ms. Dominique Aubert, so they could photograph the San Fermin Festival. The work done by Morath was published in 1955 in a book entitled 'War à la Tristesse', which was published in French, English and German, but never published in Spain due to the censorship. Pamplona´s City Council paid tribute to her in 1997.

Ingebord Morath was born in the Austrian town of Graz in 1923. She moved with his family to Germany when she was young and got deeply marked by the Second World War and the terrible consequences that occurred in the country she was living. She worked as a translator and editor for Heute met Ernst Hass´s Magazine and soon afte rentered the world of photography through the influence of famous names like Robert Cappa and Henri Cartier Bresson.

For 1953, she was a renowned professional and she worked for the best graphic magazines of  her time such as Vogue and Paris Match. Her friend ship with film director John Houston leads her to get introduced into the seventh art and the'star system' of that period. She married the play wright author Mr. Arthur Miller. Inge Morath continued her work and taking pictures almost until her death in 2002. Pamplona´s City Hall named a street in her honour.

Bull Running Trainer

'Bullrunning trainer' is a free application that simulates a Running of the Bulls choosing certain conditions, calculating the risk of the Run and querying a database with information available since 1980. This application was launched last year and it has received over 16,000 downloads Worldwide. Most users have obtained the application from Spain, France, USA and Mexico, although there have been downloads from other countries like Japan and Saudi Arabia.
During last year´s San Fermin Festival, Apple´s Headquarter in Spain kept this foreground application in their download page as the most outstanding application available in the market. 'Bullrunning trainer' is a program targeting all kind of publics with a totally informative, instructive and entertaining purpose.

Using this application, the City Council and Kukuxumuxu intended, first, educate and inform to those interested in the Running of the Bulls Festival in Pamplona about the risks and peculiarities and, secondly, they seek to make the Running of the Bulls available in a playful way to all those who do not know or do not have the opportunity to visit Pamplona during the San Fermin Festival.

The application is available on the App Store, which is the Apple platform that distributes applications for mobile devices. The application can be installed on any iPhone or iPad and its content is available in Spanish, Basque and English.
