Other famous and distinguish visitors not coming from the Film Industry have been Matt Carney, who became a great bull runner with his friend and teacher, Jerome Echagiie; Alice , Joe Disler, David Black, (he came 40 times on a row); Ray Morton and a young Bill Clinton. The writer James Michener takes a look at his book "The Drifters" stating their presence during different San Fermin editions.

Keith Baumchen

Keith Baumchen, better known by his friends as The Bomber, became one of the most illustrious visitor from the United States attending San Fermin Festival more than 40 years .  Unfortunately he died last year at the age of  65 after failing to overcome a serious illness which have him struggling for months.

This California resident in Garmisch (Germany) and tireless traveller, was one of those Americans who never missed the appointment of the Opening Ceremony (Chupinazo) every July 6. Following Hemingways footsteps, he and other famous "touristy" as Joe Distler, Matt Carny, Jesse Graham, Chris Humphrey, Noel Chandler or Davy Crockett (descendant of the legendary hero of the Alamo) arrived to Estafeta St decades ago and decided to run every single time in the same place.
Bomber used to say that for him, the nine-days of San Fermin Festival were "a gift and a celebration of life," and claimed that from the very first time he visited Pamplona, he had never known another place where you will breathe the same festive atmosphere than at San Fermin.

Run with the Bulls wearing a Suit

The custom of dressing in white and red during the San Fermin is not that old. The tradition of wearing a red scarf is though and it was in the early XIX century were the habit of wearing white clothing started to spread.

In old photographs about the running of the bulls we see young men running wearing a suit or a black blouse and espadrilles. It is so because they were wearing their best clothes in the patron saint festivities.
Run
In the present days, an American group of runners participating on the Running of the Bulls when the Miura Livestock is due (known for being the fastest ones) they decided to start wearing suits like in the old tradition. As they say, out of respect for the bulls.

Running of the Bulls History

They don´t really know when the firs Running of the Bulls took place in Pamplona, but historians say that already existed in the XVI century. The origin is the entrance of livestock used to celebrate the bullfights. At first there were not runners, but with time, it was becoming a public event in which people began to participate. Nowadays the Running of the Bulls during San Fermin Festival has become one of the most famous fiestas Worldwide.

During all these years the itinerary has changed mainly due to the needs of Pamplona´s different Bullfight Ring locations as they have change throughout history. The timetable have also suffered several changes, they started celebrating the running of the bulls at 5 am, then at 6, change at 7 and nowadays is at 8 . We must take into account the different timetable changes through out the years as 8 am today is the equivalent of 6 am in the old times. (Solar Time)

The Guard: bucket list

In 2012 the film “The Guard” was released in Spain.  Sergeant Gerry Boyle is a man who carries out his work in a very peculiar way: away from all conceivable rules, but keeping a strange line of consistency that always end up agreeing with him. One day a man happened to be killed and he discovered that a drug gang is about to introduce in the country a huge amount of drugs. Together with an FBI agent, he will try to unmask those responsible.

In one of main the moments of the film, one of the bad guys points with his gun to Sergeant Gerry Boyle (Brendan Gleeson), and after an intense conversation, the sergeant shoots the baddy. In his very last breath he talks about his unfulfilled dreams and one the them was participate in the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona.  This particular moment reflects the Anglo American tradition of making a list of things to do before dying known as the "Bucket list" in Spanish List of life.

Campaign..during San Fermín

Pamplona’s City Council promotes once again the campaign “And during the Festival… What?. Promoted by the Government of Navarre through the Navarra´s County Family and Equality Institute (INAFI).
This time it does it with a self-image using the male big-headed carnival figure "Caravinagre" hanging up the San Fermin clothing and the female big-headed figure named "Japanese" rejecting the flirts of a young runner. This campaign pursues two objectives: Join responsibilities in house working tasks and prevention of sexual arrestment.

Knigth and Day

In the movie "Knight and Day," Tom Cruise escapes from a Running with the Bulls together with Cameron Diaz, commanding a powerful motorcycle and among young runners and bulls. This is a scene from the film Knight & Day in 2019 and that it was filmed in Pamplona but in between Seville and Cadiz.

The scenes were shot in Andalusia, with tame bulls. For anyone who has seen the running of the bulls in Pamplona is impossible to imagine such a scene. But again, this is the Film Industry and the show must go on!

THE ENCIERRO 3D

Each year, thousands of people participate in one of the most dangerous events in the world: The Running with the Bulls in Pamplona. It is the exciting story of the all the runners who comes yearly from over the world to feel alive. THE RUNNING OF THE BULLS, is a documentary film in 3D, on these runners, on why they run with the bulls where there isn´t any price or award for running and cause hundreds of injuries each year. An action movie where the excitement and tension is continuous, full of violence but also of beauty, offers drama and heroism in a cocktail of emotions transporting the audience to the streets of Pamplona, in front of a stampede of bulls 600 kg and its deadly horns.
IF YOU LIKE THE RUNNING OF THE BULLS YOU MUST SEE THIS DOCUMENTARY

Bulls and Bisons

The spectacular images and rush of the Running of the Bulls through the streets of Pamplona, was also used by the advertising industry by taking pictures "in situ" on Estafeta St. Spike Lee filmed a jeans advertising imitating and adapting the local livestock and having a bunch of men pretending to run with the bulls through the streets of New York. The only thing is that instead of bulls where bisons!

The Sun Also Rises

Apart from all kinds of advertising and journalist reports, the San Fermin Festival theme has been used to set about all kind of stories.

These are some of the most famous ones: the novel The Sun also Rises by Ernest Hemingway (Fiesta, Henry King, 1956, in which none of their main actors: Tyrone Power, Ava Gardner and Errol Flynn Pamplona set foot in Pamplona, and an eponymous tv film directed by James Goldstone 1984,You and I are Three (Rafael Gil, 1962), Carnival of Thieves (Russell Rouse, 1967), a curious action film where they assaulted the National Bank right in the city center of Pamplona by taking advantage of the chaos that runs in Pamplona during the Running of the Bulls.

It wasn’t 7th July either 8 am. However they seemed. This ad is filmed also in Madrid and Los Angeles. The main characters, an American boy and girl "feel safe thanks to their VISA" and they are fear free during the Running of the Bulls and in Los  Angeles when a bear appears while they were fishing.

The scenes of the encierro (closure) will take 10 seconds from a total of 45. The filming took place in Puente la Reina, a beautiful Navarre village 25 km from Pamplona. Filming in Pamplona would have been very complicated and very expensive.

El fence that marks the Running of the Bulls itinerary is already in place and the bars and restaurants have already start advertising special lunches for the 6th July (Opening Ceremony Day) and hotels continue to receive reservations.

Javier Pelegrín a renowned local jeweller with 46 years of this occupation on his back,  delivered the Saint Mithra´s on San Fermín Chapel. A job that has lived as for him this has been a dream that.
The Mithra and crosier symbolize his status as bishop, the first Bishop of Pamplona (XXII century).

The Tómbola

The yearly Caritas Raffle took place on last Saturday in May. Caritas is the most important non-profitable organization in Navarra´s County. All those working in the Raffle do it so voluntarily. The ticket price remains the same as in previous years: 80 cents. The raffle is installed in Paseo de Sarasate (one of the main streets in Pamplona)

This year they have introduced some variations in the Raffle design because in recent years many of the best raffle prizes didn´t have their number withdrawn therefore they weren´t winners. As Caritas main objective is to have winners for all the prizes, changes have been made to ensure that all the items could be consulted and enjoyable for the winners. With this idea in mind, some prizes have become direct: 5 Volkswagen cars

San Fermín 1978

34 years ago, on July 8th  during the political transition, there were serious riots in Pamplona and unfortunately with the death, at the hands of the police, of the local citizen Germán Rodríguez. The events occurred in the bullring after the running of the bulls. It is tradition that the peñas (popular local associations) go down into the ring so they will begin their particular tour around the city. Well, a group of people-in this context-unfurled a banner asking for "Amnesty".

Within the audience that hadn’t left the bullring arena were discrepancies: some he condemned it and others reinforce them by shouting: “Amnesty!”. In that precise moment, armed police entered the alley towards de bullring arena and start shouting with live ammunition. All those in the Bullfight Ring panicked, and obviously this panic spread to the streets ... San Fermin Festival was suspended. They celebrated bullfights and running of the bulls in September when San Fermin Chiquito takes place (San Fermin Chiquito is a kind of small version of San Fermin).
The images and pictures taken in the bullring while this horrible situation was taken place were banned and the files disappeared. But few years ago some of them were recovered by a french photographer.

Estafeta Street, Bars

Along Estafeta St, one of the main streets on itinerary of the Running of the Bulls during the San Fermin Festival,  you will find many bars. It´s important for you to know that traditionally when you take a glass of wine it normally will be accompanied by a “pincho” (kind a tapa).

Alex Múgica

Each year they are various contests in Pamplona to choose the best tapas in the city (with specialized juries). These are some of the bar names along Estafeta St. that have won awards in recent years: "Alex Múgica", "Fitero", "El Gaucho", "La Granja" and "Niza". If you plan to visit San Fermin Festival, take note!

Pamplona and The ozono

Today, June 16, the Pamplona citizens who want to know how is the state of the ozone layer they may do so by requesting an information service that has launched the City. The City Hall Ozone services will send the information via text messages to your mobile rating the quality of air. Those interested can request it by calling the “Citizen Attention call line” -010 -. This service is free.

All those wanting to join the service, must provide their full name and phone to this “Citizen Attention Call Line” on 010. From that moment on they will receive the alert messages on ozone levels registered by the Department of Environment of Navarra.
Through the new mobile information system, citizens may receive warning messages when it is suspected that the ozone level can reach the information threshold, ie 180 mcrg/m3, and when that threshold has been exceeded and when it ceased. From 180 mcgr/m3 higher concentrations.
For sure they will be alerted on the low ozone level during the San Fermin Festival and especially during the Running of the Bulls, only those that have rent a balcony spot will receive a positive message as they won´t be on the ground. So our question is, is it really worth it to apply for this service before the San Fermin Festival?

San Fermín an the Civil warm

In 1937, during the Civil War, there were only ecclesiastical celebrations. There was no secular celebration. But in 1938, unlike the previous year on July 7 there was a religious procession.

Plaza del Castillo. 1938
So in an extraordinary council meeting in Pamplona City Council on June 30th  they agreed to make 2 different religious processions one San Fermin Festivity eve and another one on July 7th , the date celebrating the Saint of the City, following the traditional route holding numerous events with the solemnity and traditionally of San Fermin Festival events.
In those days the military uniforms predominated among the typical San Fermin Festival clothing in red an white.
